He starts with a brief history of the Chew Valley gritstone outcrops and their importance to British climbing, before moving on to tales and dramatic images of his climbs in The Alps and some of the world’s highest peaks, including Everest.
Tuesday 5th February 2019. Harriet Tuckey: “Everest, the first ascent; the untold story of Griffith Pugh, the man who made it possible”. This lecture is based on the book of the same title by Harriet Tuckey, Griffith Pugh’s daughter. She shows how, using science and technology to prepare and equip the team, Pugh played a pivitol role in ensuring the success of the 1953 Everest expedition. His influence spread well beyond high altitude climbing; he was intimately involved in the investigation, research and subsequent recommendations that followed the tragic death of 3 young adults from hypothermia during the four Inns walk in the Peak in 1964. Harriet provides a fascinating insight into this enigmatic man whose life’s work has had an effect on all who enjoy the mountain environment, whether in the UK or the greater ranges.
