“Everest, the first ascent; the untold story of Griffith Pugh, the man who made it possible”.
This lecture is based on the book of the same title by Griff Pugh’s daughter, Harriet Tuckey [winner of the Boardman Tasker Prize and Mountain Literature Award, Banff Festival].
She shows how, using science and technology to prepare and equip the team, Pugh played a pivitol role in ensuring the success of the 1953 Everest expedition. His influence spread well beyond high altitude climbing; he was intimately involved in the investigation, research and subsequent recommendations that followed the tragic death of 3 young adults from hypothermia during the four Inns walk in the Peak in 1964. Harriet provides a fascinating insight into this enigmatic man whose life’s work has had an effect on all who enjoy the mountain environment, whether in the UK or the greater ranges.
