Ali Cowburn that excentric and cantancarous climber and Cromlech club member passed away at the age of 89 in hospital a couple of weeks ago.He was a character and self confessed miser, but what a guy, i climbed with him when he was in his 60,s with him leading routes like Black Grub E3 on Beeston Tor also soloing all his party pieces at Hobby Moor and Windgather to an admiring young audience of amazed onlookers he loved the attention.Trips to Spain were taken with us swinging leads on Amtrax at El Chorro, and rescuing him from near a death battle with a crazed irishman at Sella refugio He was still cabable of burning me off bouldering at the Roaches he was so light and wiry.First ascents on Gogarth with Joe Brown, WInking Crack, Bloody chimney, sharing leads are a few of his prizes.I saw less of him in the last few years but occasionally could be seen cruising up the steep wall at Manchester climbing centre. He will be missed a true Manchester climbing character. His funeral is at Manchester Crematorium Barlow Moor road Chorlton M21 7GZ 12 o clock. on Thursday 31st Jan.
