2020 SunRock update [Nov 2019]

2020 SunRock meet on the Costa Blanca, 14-21 March…update 27 November 2019   Hi SunRockers   We’ve already got about 25 confirmed or probable for SunRock 2020, so it’s looking like another fun trip. Here’s an update so you can make plans / book flights / accommodation etc:   Dates: We’ve confirmed dates as 14 to 21 March, but various people are thinking of staying for longer around those dates.   Location: We’ll be on the Costa Blanca, and I’ve block-booked a couple of large houses at FinePark near Finestrat (and beneath the Puig Campana) for the week. These sleep a total of 30+ (in a mix of bunk and conventional bed rooms) and there are also a few smaller houses in the same facility. It’s where we stayed in 2017 – check out https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2017/02/11/rucksack-club-sunrock-meet-sella-costa-blanca/ https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2017/02/12/penyon-difach/ and the posts around there if you need a reminder).  I have negotiated a special rate of Euro 110 per person per week, BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR OWN BOOKINGS. Please email Michael at michael@finepark.com to confirm your booking, along with dates of course and any room preferences / plans for sharing.   Flights & car hire: You’re spoilt for choice, but it’s[…]

Pictures for this year’s RC Journal

Pictures for the Journal It’s helpful to have your pictures where you think they are appropriate in an article. This helps me to insert them later as near as I can to the intended placing. However, we also need your pictures as separate file attachments – jpeg, in as high a resolution as possible. We can’t simply take embedded files and use them. This is mainly because the layout on a Journal page will be different from a standard document page, and the software can’t handle embedded pictures. Also, when pictures are embedded they are a lower resolution. When you send me the pictures separately, PLEASE send them as a FILE ATTACHMENT. I can’t use a picture embedded in an email – It’s hard to extract, and sometimes impossible, and again loses resolution. I realise, these days, most phones put a picture in an email body when you send them. Your phone email should also allow you to send as an attachment from the picture library. Many thanks Neil Goldsmith Editor

Snapshot of members alpine activities 2019

Whilst there has not been a formal Alpine Meet this year, members have been active in the main part of the European Alps and a tem also visited Colorado. The list compiled includes both spring ski ascents as well as the traditional summer alpine activities. The prize for the greatest activity goes to Dave Palmer who has had an incredibly prolific year…as well as climbing a fair number of excellent alpine rock routes on lower peaks, he nabbed 12 of the major 4000m peaks as well as a fair number of subsidiary 4000m summits…his picture below  sums up a feeling we all get at times in the Alps!  Will Harris squeezed in the Pierre Allain Route on the North face of the Dru during a busy season guiding; these are noted in the list below. Several others had good trips too and undoubtedly some members activities have been missed altogether, hence the use of  ‘Snapshot’ in the title! Apologies to any member not contacted and thanks to everyone who submitted info, allowing this list to be compiled.   Chamonix/Mt Blanc Massif  The Dru North Face/Pierre Allain Route: Will Harris [RC] and Stu Macaleese Stu Macaleese on the Lambert Crack. Do you eat enough protein?

Do you eat enough protein? A fascinating question that my fellow anaesthetist and regular climbing partner, Jeremy Windsor, has put to Rebecca Dent, a sports nutritionalist living in Chamonix, who provides a nutrition service to endurance and adventure sports including mountaineers, alpinists, mountain guides, ultra runners, ironman triathletes, climbers, ski tourers and expedition members. See the full article on Jeremy’s Blog, Surviving the Death Zone…there is good advice for all of us all trying to stay fit despite advancing years! Andy Tomlinson
