All places have now been booked for this meet. I have booked spaces in this hut https://www.frcc.co.uk/venues/birkness/ for the nights of Friday 27th and Saturday 28th March 2020 to walk the Newlands Circuit on the Saturday. Leaving the hut at 8.00am, this walk will start and finish at the hut. We will be heading up Robinson straight up the path across the road behind the hut. From Robinson we’ll go to: Hindsgarth; Dale Head; across to High Spy; Maiden Moor and Cat Bells dropping down NW into Little Town. Then we go back up onto Causey Pike; Scar Crag; Sail; Eel Crag; Wandope; Whiteless Pike and back down into Buttermere village and then along the road a short distance back to the hut. I hope most people will do the full circuit which is about 23 miles but it is possible to cut the route short either by dropping down to Honister from Dale Head or by stopping in Little Town, but you’d need to sort your own transport to get back to the hut. Carole Smithies writes: Very sad to report that our Honorary Member Peter Roberts died on 31st December 2019.  Peter was a member of the Club for over 50 years and he was warden of Beudy Mawr from 1972 to 1994. I now have the full details of Peter Roberts’ funeral and memorial get-together.  His funeral will take place at Peel Green Cemetery & Crematorium, 716 Liverpool Road, Manchester M30 7LW [Junction 11 off M60] next Friday, 17 January, at 2 20pm.  Afterwards, since there are no family arrangements, we plan to meet at the Swinging Bridge Hotel, 18-20 Trafford Boulevard, Manchester M41 7JE together with members of Peter’s other Club, Tyn Llwyn Isaf.  The hotel is a short drive from the crematorium, click here to see attached map, and close to where Peter worked at Trafford Park.  We will be able to drink to Peter’s memory there and if needs be, purchase a bite to eat before travelling home. The solicitors who are arranging the funeral, have asked me to let them know how many people will be there.  So please, if you haven’t already done so, let Carole know if you will be at the funeral and/or the get-together.[…]

I’ve just acquired an old Garmin Dakota 20 gps unit. I’ve no real idea how to use it. Has anyone any advice, eg, websites for instructions, map downloads (preferably free!). Thanks

Happy New Year! Here’s the situation for the first three months of 2020. Bedford MC have booked 10 spaces for this coming weekend (11th/12th) and Granville Toyn has booked 2 places from this Friday (10th) until the following Saturday (18th). Gareth Llewellyn has his Club meet on the weekend of 25th/26th – contact Gareth for details. There are no other bookings in January, February or March.

Just a polite reminder that on the day please help Carole with her list of who is out on the hills by making sure she has your name at Marsden and either get it ticked off at The Ramblers or, if you drop out, please ring/text her (or ring the pub of you can’t get through). Marsden-Edale 4th January 2020. The annual post-Christmas romp on the moors needs no introduction!  Meet as usual at Marsden at the end of Wessenden Rd (GR SE048107 OS South Pennines OL 21 map) for a 7:45 start – finish at The Ramblers in Edale.   Granville will be doing his world famous soup kitchen again at Woodhead (car park at the start of the old road to Glossop) and later at Upper North Grain.  Granville writes: “I will be in the two usual places. Firstly just off the Woodhead road, and then when everybody has past through, I will proceed to the Snake road, and again wait there until every weary soul has passed through. The menu will be… Woodhead road: Golden vegetable soup , mild chilli bean soup and bread roll. Tea , coffee, hot chocolate and plenty of water for bottles. Snake road: All of the above plus cakes various, for a little sugar boost, before hitting the Seal Stones. NB  Both soups are vegetarian , the chilli soup is vegan. Last weekend John Warburton informed members of the very sad news of Alf Gleadell’s sudden death on 23rd November 2019. His funeral is to be held at Walton Lea Crematorium, Chester Rd, Higher Walton, Warrington WA4 6TB on Thursday 19thDecember 2019 at 3.40pm and the celebration of his life with continue at Tetley Walker Recreation Club, 37 Long Ln, Warrington WA2 8PU after. The family have requested no flowers but donations to a charity, which will be announced later, would be appreciated. Understandably we expect many people will want to attend so, to help the family prepare, could you please let Andy Tomlinson know if you intend going by Friday 12th December, ideally by email.
