North York Moors Walking Meet David Nightingale

Join me for one or both days to explore two different faces of the North York Moors, an area the club hasn’t visited in many years.

Saturday 22nd: ‘The Finest View in England’. The walk starts 10 a.m., meeting outside the café at the National Park Visitor Centre near Sutton Bank Grid Ref: SE 516 831 (pay and display parking).

The National Park Authority modestly claim that this 11-mile walk features ‘The Finest View in England’. Some claim! The route visits Sutton Bank Escarpment along the Cleveland Way long distance trail, Whitestone Cliffs, the chocolate-box village of Boltby, quiet country lanes and the Hambleton White Horse. This is not a difficult walk and could easily feature in a Sunday magazine Days Out article, but it has lots of interest along the way.

Sunday 23rd: ‘Round Hill - The Highest Summit of the North York Moors’. The walk starts at 10 a.m., meeting in the village hall car park at Chop Gate village, 13 miles north of Helmsley on the B1257 Grid Ref. SE 558 993 (pay and display parking).

Our 10-mile route takes in Cold Moor, Wainstone Crags, sections of the Cleveland Way and Round Hill – at 454m the highest summit of the National Park. It’s a splendid moorland walk, with extensive views and more of a wilderness feel than my Saturday route.

Accommodation (B and B, Hotel, camping, campervan sites) is available in and around Thirsk and Helmsley on an ‘organise it yourself’ basis. Dependent on numbers and participants’ accommodation arrangements, I may try to arrange a communal pub meal on Saturday evening.

If you are interested in attending, or would like more details please let me know by email or give me a phone call.
