Those Bleaklow Stones…

Bleaklow Stones, Saturday 2nd August. The sound of the Curlew and plaintive cry of the Golden Plover will reach us on the gentle, warm breeze which will accompany our 20-mile journey over the fine wilderness that is Bleaklow on Saturday 2nd August. The weather has been booked well ahead – I am not going to say what sort of weather however! The aim is to tick off the eponymous Stones across the moor from Snake Summit to The Ladybower Inn and then to rehydrate before getting a lift back to the start and our homeward transport. If you fancy it then please let me, Peter Edgerton, know by email to rowanho@dircon.co.uk by Thursday 31st July so transport can be arranged.

Printed Meetstaff – July

My apologies, I thought I’d sent Meetstaff off to the printers just after the E-mail issue, but it seems not! The printers have it now, however, and are happy to turn it around straight away, so it shouldn’t be too much longer. My thanks to Mike Gregg for pointing out the omission. Andrew Beckett

What’s been happening at Beudy

Well – for a start, we’ve now got full fibre broadband at Beudy, so you can now check the weather forecast, the bus timetables and look at the latest mountain safety information. Oh, and you can doomscroll to your heart’s content! Due to the thickness of the walls, the signal does not reach the shower block, so those of you who habitually read the digital paper whilst sat on the toilet won’t be able to (it’s a disgusting habit anyway!). I’m sure I can rely on you to use the facility wisely and tactfully. The Committee has also approved the proposal to split the big dormitory into two smaller spaces, each sleeping 4 (or maybe 5) people. This is an attempt to increase the attractiveness of Beudy to smaller groups who might want their own space – families, genders, snorers, etc. The work will be carried out towards the end of the year when usage is even quieter than normal. Lets see how it goes! And – I’ve saved the best until the last – there is a dual tray airfryer in the kitchen! It’s already had the thumbs up from lots of people (well, they both said it was[…]

Beudy bookings update

For those of you who are not going to High Moss this month, here’s how it’s looking at Beudy in July. Couple of parties in this coming weekend (5th/6th) but still room. There’s a midweek booking and then regular visitors OBEC have booked the whole hut the next weekend (12th/13th). Veterans in Sefton have one of their sessions from Wednesday 16th to Friday 18th, and then the hut is empty until the end of the month, apart from Joe Fisher’s group of 3 on the last weekend (26th/27th). Why not try out the new airfryer and – even better (but not for some) – the Wifi! You can check out availability by looking at the Hut Bookings Calendar on the website. As ever, let me know if you plan to go.

Call for Gallery and Calendar photos April/May/June 2025

It’s that time again…April, May and June have passed by and I am looking for photos to add to the Gallery, as well as potential Calendar photos. A few members have been sending me photos as they are taken and I am very grateful to them. I also know that many members have been out and about over this time in both the UK and further afield so please send me your photos! As usual, please send High Definition photos to: photos@rucksackclub.org and please include the following information: Month taken; Title [with names where appropriate]; Photographer. Please don’t send them via WhatsApp, as the file size is reduced meaning the picture quality is also reduced. Looking forward to a deluge of photographs to upload onto the Gallery! Andy

2nd July – Saddleworth Northern 5 Trigs walk

The A walk this coming Wednesday is the Saddleworth Nothern 5 Trigs.  It’s an 18 miler so we’ll need to set off at 8:30.  The starting point is the Delph car park off Millgate (A6052) SD986077 – additional car parking is on the main road in front of the wollen mill. My version of the route follows some interesting local paths to link Bishops Park and Crompton Moor trigs, then via Ogden to the Blackstone Edge trig (passing the enigmatic Dry Mere and Sun End) and then via the Pennine Way to White Hill and Standedge trigs and via other local paths back to Delph for a celebratory pint in the White Lion. Please let me know if you are coming along (my details in the Handbook).

DAVE PALMER ACCIDENT

Hello all members, as i hope you are all aware DAVE had a serious fall when scrambling on Tryfan in April his spinal injuries are very serious. He will be in the hospital for a least 12 months where he will undergo spinal cord surgery and extensive rehabilitation the costs after he is released for physiotherapy& clinics will be between £1000- 6000 per week, I have asked our president to raise the issue at the next committee meeting with the view to the club supporting Dave with a donation from our funds. If the club agrees great if not I am asking for advice on how to set up a fund raising event for this cause. Your input would be very welcome. John Warburton.
