The Fall

The Fall   In West Cornwall, the morning of Sunday 4th July 2021 dawned grey, dull and misty, not looking good for the climbing day we had planned. However, the forecast was for ‘improving later’, so we decided to have a look. The drive from my place to the main climbing areas of Penwith takes around 45 minutes, give or take. By the time we got to Penzance things were looking up, so we decided to go and climb on the black stuff at a crag called Trewellard, in the heart of the St Just mining district.   I had been climbing regularly in recent years, although, for various reasons, not as regularly as I would have liked. The previous winter I had trained hard, lost weight, got stronger and fitter and kicked off the climbing year in good style. I should point out that, then and now, I am operating firmly in the lower grades, leading up to Severe and occasionally seconding to VS. My teenage son Dylan, who was with me, had been climbing for about four years. We were feeling good and we were up for it, looking forward to a good season.   The approach to[…]

Craigallan lost property….

Hi all, if anyone is going up to craigallan in the near future and would be able to collect and bring back a camping mat left behind by someone in our team from a recent visit please, it would be much appreciated! I’m Sheffield based, but can arrange to collect from elsewhere in/near the peak, or happy to arrange/pay for postage, and a donation to Mountain Rescue! Many thanks in advance, Chris Pembroke

Beudy Mawr 75th anniversary meet this weekend

A bit of an update. At present, all the bunks in the hut have been taken and, if everyone turns up who has said they want to attend the anniversary meal on Saturday, there will be 23! Granville will be cooking and we’ve gone for a typical 1940s menu. If you are coming, don’t forget any other provisions, drinks and a pillow! The forecast is looking good, which prompts me to suggest that if any climbers want to repeat the routes done on the 1948 weekend, they need to do Trilon and Crackstone Rib on the Wastad, Nea and the ‘Great Flake’ (now the first pitch of Sickle)on the Grochan, Spiral Stairs, Tributary Crack (up and down) and Parchment Passage (down) on the Cromlech, The Cracks on the Mot, Gambit Climb on Clogwyn y Ddysgl and Avalanche/Red Wall/Longlands and Paradise on Lliwedd. Phew – there’s a challenge! Whilst no walks were recorded in the log book that weekend, I cannot believe that such an occasion would not be marked without forays over into Ogwen and across to Yr Wyddfa.

Beudy Mawr – possible alterations to main dormitory

Steve Gregory and I are thinking about splitting the main dormitory at Beudy into two separate bedrooms. Various reasons have prompted this (reduced usage by large groups particularly since Covid, wanting to attract people who feel more comfortable in a more private space (including families) and the ability to offer separate male/female rooms where appropriate). The positive reaction to the work done with the bedrooms at High Moss has also led us to think it would be a good move. Before we get into the detail we thought we’d ask you for your thoughts. So that we don’t clog up the website, please send me an email (billdeakin@yahoo.com) if you have any. Thanks
