Widdop

Wednesday 6th September – Evening Climbing Meet A high, remote, moorland crag. At 350m altitude, somewhat blustery, midge-ridden and rather grey, our visit to Widdop can add edge to our adage “Get out there…” The new YMC guide to Yorkshire Gritstone (Volume 2) couldn’t praise Widdop more highly. We managed a select few routes (Krypton Route with the additional excellent top-out moves of the Flake, no mild for a Mild VS lead and the varied Curving Crack) before heading along to boulder adventures. Inevitably perhaps the wee-beasties won the war but not before some of us claimed satisfaction on such classics as Pickpocket’s Crack (Andy Stewart pictured), Fagin’s Ridge and Red Edge among others.

Running Hill Pits

Helen and I caused great consternation by confessing that this was our first visit to The Pits. The local Greenfield cognesenti couldn’t understand how we’d managed 25 years in the vicinity without a trip. We were just waiting for the right evening! When better than a Rucksack Club evening meet and a good turn out despite earlier rain. Gorgeous light, great company and good climbing – no giveaways!  Andy’s lead of Spanner Wall was the high point of the evening (tough even on a top rope)  and Jeff’s ascent of Plumb Line was a great effort, despite the dodgy shoulder.  Climbing until the sun went down.  Grand!
