Calling all SunRockers
Here are he details for the 2019 SunRock meet:
Leonidio is a newly developed climbing area on the East coast of the Peloponnese, about 4 hours south of Athens. Helen and I spent about 3 weeks there last autumn and had a fabulous time and really liked the vibe, the village and the climbing. There are dozens of sectors spread over the huge red walls behind the village and up the winding valley that heads steeply inland. There are good options for sun and shade (we could really only tolerate the shady ones in late October and still managed a new crag most days). There’s a good mix of grades; some but by no means all benefitting from the “holiday grading” of Kalymnos.
I haven’t found any giant villas in the area, so am proposing a slightly different format from usual. I’ve provisionally block booked a set of 6 apartments in Leonidio Plaka (port) next to the beach and the campsite. This is a great setting, a few minutes drive from the climbing. There’s no communal cooking or dining area but there are a couple of decent restaurants a short stroll away, and other excellent spots a short drive. For those of you who are familiar with Kalymnos dining, you are hard pressed to spend more than €15 for a 3 course meal with wine.
I’m leaving people to make their own bookings for the apartments. There are 6 in all, 5 with 1 double bed and 2 single beds per apartment and the other one has 1 double bed and 1 single bed. See below for some photos of one of the apartments.
The apartments cost 33 euro for 2 persons and 7 euro more for extra person (max 4 persons), so three people sharing (and each enjoying a bed to themselves!) works out at €93 each for a week. To book please contact Christos at Camping Semeli <info@camping-semeli.gr> and mention my name and The Rucksack Club. I suggest that you cc me on the email. The apartments are being held for us until end October, so book early to avoid disappointment (though there are a few other options nearby at the beach/port – search Plaka Leonidio). This arrangement should also suit people who’d like to stay longer – there is currently availability either side of the suggested week.
We’ll be on a road trip in the van so will stay next door at the campsite – let me know if you are tempted by a longer trip.
