Indoor Meet: Harriet Tuckey "Everest: the first ascent...the untold story of Griffith Pugh, the man who made it possible"

    https://rucksackclub.org/event/indoor-meet-harriett-tuckey/
    19:30 -22:00
    05/02/2019

Tuesday 5th February 2019. Harriet Tuckey: “Everest, the first ascent; the untold story of Griffith Pugh, the man who made it possible”. This lecture is based on the book of the same title by Harriet Tuckey, Griffith Pugh’s daughter. She shows how, using science and technology to prepare and equip the team, Pugh played a pivitol role in ensuring the success of the 1953 Everest expedition. His influence spread well beyond high altitude climbing; he was intimately involved in the investigation, research and subsequent recommendations that followed the tragic death of 3 young adults from hypothermia during the four Inns walk in the Peak in 1964. Harriet provides a fascinating insight into this enigmatic man whose life’s work has had an effect on all who enjoy the mountain environment, whether in the UK or the greater ranges.
All Indoor Meets are held at Heaton Moor Sports Club SK4 2NF. Bar and raffle: prizes welcome. 7.30pm start. For members and non-members: please tell your friends.

    Skiddaw House

    https://rucksackclub.org/event/skiddaw-house/
    All day
    13/02/2019-15/02/2019

This meet at Skiddaw House is midweek for the nights of Wed 13th and Thursday 14th February, it has proved very popular and all the places have now all been filled. Those joining Betty will have received additional information via email.

Skiddaw House is in a fantastic setting, remote and surrounded by the higher hills of the northern fells. It sits at 470m above sea level and is approx. 3-4 miles from the road. Access and parking are available at Threlkeld, Latrigg, Mosedale or to the north at Peterhouse Farm near Bassenthwaite.

The young wardens, who previously ran Black Sail Hostel, have made it a welcoming and homely place to stay. There are washrooms and showers, a large kitchen area with hobs, a very comfortable lounge and drying areas. The kitchen and lounge have stoves and there are even hot water bottles in the bunk rooms!

There is no need to carry in all your food as they keep a well-stocked shop where it is possible to buy food for your evening meal and breakfasts. There is usually a good range of bottled beers, wine and spirits should you wish to lighten your load further.

There is plenty of walking from the door with Skiddaw, and Blencathra both close. On my last visit I noted that Suzy, one of the wardens, held the record for the fastest round of the sky line around Skiddaw House.
