Beudy Mawr – advice wanted

Many thanks to all who responded so quickly to the request for advice about the driveway on the left hand side of the hut. We will be looking at your suggestions and recommendations and will hope to come up with a solution that balances the various issues involved, including cost, frequency of use, aesthetics, the National Park and local authority planning. Thanks again. Bill and Steve.

Tom Anderson Reflects … Winter on the Coniston Fells

Tom Anderson writes: Being a Hut warden is always a bit of a poisoned chalice.  But I did get a lot of support from members and the committee! This video was taken when I was on a service visit during a good snowy week and was a great day out as snow always enhances the hills.  The route round the group from High Moss is good either way round and does not involve driving.  Being warden was the only job I had that involved work and play and I am glad I did it for 10 years!  My early retirement worked well for me and the Club. Trust you all, enjoy the video, you can find it here. Regards Tom [Web sec note – it may not load instantly]

Beudy Mawr – any advice?

Steve Gregory and I have been looking at how best we can prevent this sort of thing happening at Beudy. Maybe something like a plastic mesh/grid like they have at Stanage Popular end car parking area. Has anybody had any experience of this kind of product, bearing in mind the ground slopes up from the road? Thanks.

Catch up video on Sustainability in the Outdoors and a Dolomites Adventure

The catch up video from Tuesday’s Double Bill Zoom show is now available, in case you missed this brilliant evening’s entertainment. Dr Cath Flitcroft, The BMC’s lead on all things access and sustainability related, gave us a whistle stop tour of all the activities that The BMC is undertaking to support a more sustainable, bio-diverse and carbon-neutral outdoors, and ideas for actions that we as individuals and as a Club can take. Inspiring to see so much good work taking place, much of it under-the-radar, from Moorland conservation to biodiversity in the BMC’s eight crags, and litter-picking to behaviour nudging and path repairs. A few takeaways for easy-to-do actions we could all take: – how about giving your no-longer-used gear a new home? Check out the Old Gear Directory https://www.thebmc.co.uk/where-can-I-reuse-repair-recycle-my-outdoor-climbing-hiking-gear – try out The BMC’s lift sharing app next time you Get Out There! https://liftshare.com/uk/community/bmc – buy a square metre of sphagnum moss and do your bit for our marvellous moorlands and delivering next-zero Buy 1 sqm of Sphagnum to save the Moorlands Watch the video for loads more inspiring ideas! Talking of inspiration, Will Pitt and Tom Derrick’s trip report of Dollies and Follies was all the encouragement you[…]

Plea for research participants

Hi folks, apologies for the off-topic post, but I’m looking for volunteers to contribute to a psychology research project by completing a short anonymous survey. The questions are about experiences of being alone (positive or negative) and it usually takes about 15-30 minutes. We just need a few more people to reach the target number of responses, so I’ll be eternally grateful to anyone who fancies taking part. More information here: https://york.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9B7TbdLYOzATJVs Thanks!

Wednesday walk 24th Jan. Route variation from published.

The forecast for tomorrow is good – dry with sunny intervals but still windy.  The published route was to go to Black Hill via Holme Clough and return via Pennine Way & Laddow.  This is fine as a summer route but can be quite a struggle in parts especially after the storms this last couple of days.  I plan a drier route of around 11 miles and depending on speed and enthusiasm we can extend it to include Laddow (via featherbed moss trig) for a walk of around 13.5 miles. A: Greenfield, Birchen Clough, Trinnacle, Dovestones/Chew edges, 11 ml (possible detour to Laddow 13.5 ml) Coordinator: Ian Helliwell Start: Binn Green A635 SE017044  10am Pub: Clarence, Greenfield Early Doors Maps: – 1:25,000: Dark Peak W Note route variation to miss Black Hill due to weather and conditions underfoot. AM Route :  Fp down S & track NE to Yeoman Hey Resvr dam; trks NE/E/ESE on N side of reservoirs to Weir 038050; ascend Birchen Clough via scrambly path. Round edges via Raven Stones and the Platt Memorial to cross Ashway Brook and on to Dovestones Edge. Via Rob’s Rocks to Chew Resvr. PM. Route : Follow edges W via top[…]
