The Gallery

I’m delaying putting the May gallery shots out until I reach double figures, of which I am some way short. I am sure some of you would like to share your pictures with other Members, rather than have them languishing somewhere in your own personal gallery on your phone. I can understand that the ‘This Time Last Year’ section might be sparse, given that the lockdown was affecting all of us last year. Hope to hear from you.

Gogarth Meet 2021 – 3 and 4 July – BOOK NOW TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

It’s only a month to go until the Gogarth Meet and I’ve been holding off this update because potential restrictions are still a bit unclear. Wales has recently announced that groups of up to 30 can meet outside from 7th June (which has been the case in England for a while) and larger numbers are potentially allowed as part of a “Regulated Gathering” which includes team sports. There will be further updates in both Wales and England before the meet, which could result in fewer (or conceivably more) restrictions. The Gogarth Meet is usually a pretty laid back affair (I normally cater for about twice the number of people who book because most of you don’t bother to tell me or leave it for a last-minute weather check – oh ye of little faith!) Unfortunately, this year we’re going to have to be a bit more organised and ask you to confirm that you are coming ASAP – in the event that we do need to restrict numbers it will be on a “first-come, first-served” basis. We’re booked into the Valley of the Rocks campsite as usual, but again they’ve asked me to confirm numbers given the likely “stay-cation” pressure[…]

Geoff Bell’s Dark Peak Wells memorial walk

Jo Wallis, Geoff’s daughter, sends a message: On behalf of my mum Mary, and the rest of our family, we would like to thank all the Rucksacker’s who came to my dad’s funeral; those who came to our house and those able to attend the service, and also to those who have taken the time to ring or write to mum. All have been a source of solace at this difficult time. As most of you will know, dad had Motor Neurone Disease, and should anyone wish to make a donation in dad’s name, we have created a place to do this here https://geoffbell.muchloved.com Looking forwards, Andy Llewellyn and I are hatching a plan to co-host a meet later this year to revisit some of Bell’s Wells. Dad put on a walk in March 1999 called Dark Peak Wells. Over 14 hours, there were numerous crossings of Kinder and Bleaklow. 42 miles were covered and 14 wells found. The walks will start and finish in Glossop and mum would be delighted to welcome participants afterwards and will provide some refreshment. I intend finding ‘just a few Bell’s Wells’, Andy is being more ambitious, and plans to find ‘some of Bell’s[…]

The bunkhouse is approx. 4 km from both Cheviot summit (815m), the Pennine Way and also Hen Hole crags which offers wild and atmospheric rock climbing, across most grades. Mountain bike routes can also be explored in local forests. This is one of the nicest bunkhouse locations you could wish for and it is well appointed with a comfy lounge, two shower/bathrooms, large kitchen, hot water and wood burning stoves. I shall be providing a delicious communal ‘Masterchef’ standard meal for all on the Saturday night and organising some light-hearted after dinner entertainment. Hut OS Map Ref: NT 882 226. Gospel Pass Black Mountains cycling Saturday 10th July

The plan is to meet at Llanvihangel Crucorney 325 206 next to the Skirrid Mountain Inn at 10 00 am. The round trip to Hay on Wye over the Gospel Pass is about 30 miles with around 1100 meters of ascent. The Gospel Pass is the highest road in Wales 1801 feet, so at my age I wont be rushing but enjoying the sites of this beautiful part of Wales. I suggest a cafe lunch in Hay on Wye and a socially distance pint in the Skirrid at the end of the day. Let me know if you are interested by Wednesday 7th July. This is replacement day meet , for the joint M AM meet which has been rescheduled for 2022. Keith
