Winter Mountaineering from Craigallan 24/25 Feb 2018

Thirteen lucky members and guests attended the Winter Mountaineering Meet at Craigallan on 24/25th February and were rewarded with superb weather and conditions: cold and sunny with the hills well covered with good neve. Various Munros and other hills were visited from Ben Lui in the south to Ben Nevis in the north. Ascents were also made of Castle Ridge on Ben Nevis and Twisting Gully in Coire nan Lochan, both Grade III. However, the overall standard of ice climbing on the meet was raised considerably by the ‘A’ team comprised of Ewan Russell, Sam Farnsworth and Tom Nichols who climbed a pair of Grade V’s: Minus Two Gully on Ben Nevis on the Saturday followed by Stand and Deliver on Aonach Beag the following day. Andy Tomlinson made a notable bid to join the Don’t-have-a-Rucksack-Club when his rolled about 1,000’ down the flank of Beinn a’Bheithir. Fortunately, not only was he not wearing it at the time but he was able to recover it as well. Gareth Llewelyn and Gary Bunting discovered a location to the north of Beinn a’Chreachain where a bridge across the Water of Tulla doesn’t exist. There are lots of such places on this stretch[…]

Pyrenees Meet 2018

Hello all, Currently starting to look at the camping places for this summer meet (4th to 12th August, Lescun). If you are interested, could you fill in this quick survey? https://doodle.com/poll/pstw538gb2p2dkrz I know it’s still early to know for sure for many people, but given the limited size of camping spots in the area, I’ll try to book something in advance even if it means making modifications later on. However, having a rough idea of the number of people interested would be helpful. For the moment this is my choice for the camping spot http://www.camping-gite-lescun-pyrenees.com/ Please note my coordinates have changed (to be published in the next meetstaff), if you need to contact me for any info Phone: +33 6 29 38 43 50 Email: alexandre.bourdeu@gmail.com (but I’ll keep checking my fromer address)

Beudy bookings update

Dan Hostford has had to cancel his 10/11 March booking, so the hut is available (i.e., empty) throughout March. The hut is available for Club use over the Easter period (31 March to 6 April). To date, Andy Baron has booked 2 spaces for the Easter weekend. For the rest of April, we have two Pinnacle Club members in from the 12th to the 15th. The 70th anniversary meet at Beudy is on the21st/22nd – see separate post. On the May Day weekend (5th to 7th), OBEC, a club that has been coming to Beudy for over 50 years, have booked the whole place. On the Spring Bank weekend (26th to 28th), Cec Rhodes is coordinating a weekend of activities, so we have reserved the whole hut for him. If you want to use Beudy, just let Steven Gregory or myself know.

Beudy Mawr – 70 years on

The lease on Beudy was signed on 22 April 1948, so we thought we’d have a ‘bit of a do’ for its 70th birthday over the weekend of 21/22 April. Granville is doing some food for us on the Saturday, so please let us know if you intend coming. Peter Harding did the first ascent of Trilon on the inaugural Meet held on 24/25 April – maybe we can do something similar! There will also be stuff from the archives for you to look at. We expect it to be busy, so the sooner you tell us the better. 2-3 June Steven Gregory and Bill Deakin Beudy Mawr Working Meet There is always something to be done at Beudy. Its the usual script – work like stink on the Saturday, enjoy a meal prepared by us on Saturday night and then do what you want on the Sunday. Let us know if you are coming so we can allocate jobs (and food).

Any one in the Calpe Area who could lend a rope for a day?

I’ve come out to Calpe today 17/02/18 just with the intention of single pitch climbing for a week so just have a single . However given our close proximity to the Penon it would be nice to do a climb with meter rope my daughter on it, we’re in the old harbour. I’ve been told there a few Rucksack members out here at the moment, so wondering if anyone would be happy to lend me a 2nd rope for the day as we’d climb as a 3. Full replacement of rope if it gets damaged or fallen on and a suitable hire fee is there too. Many thanks, Craig Hannah.
