I have reserved space at this self-catering hut in the village of St Jakob in Defereggen for 7-14th July. It has a mixture of double rooms, twin rooms, dormitories sleeping 8, and a couple of single rooms and a room for 4; fully equipped modern kitchen, recently built shower and washroom wing, supermarket just round the corner, bus service, and a couple of restaurants. Wifi across the road in the council office. There is not much parking space outside but there is a car park round the corner.

Use as a base for day walks up to peaks such as the Deferegger Pfannhorn 2820m, the Seespitze 3021m, Almerhorn 2985m, or do a multi-day tour of some local huts with or without some peaks. Numerous valley-based walks on well-maintained paths and tracks, using the bus service up the valley for access.
Climbing at the Hundskofel and s’Kasermandl near the village, at Arnig near Kals, and Falkenstein east of Matrei – Glanz.
Via ferrata: Blauspitze from Grosdorf, Kals; there are others but these are further away.
