The BMC’s Clubs and Communities Award recognises volunteers who have given great service within a club or other group or community within the broader BMC.
Huge congratulations to Bill Deakin for being Highly Commended in the 2026 Awards. Here’s what the BMC had to say about Bill’s volunteering contribution:
Bill Deakin has been part of the Rucksack Club since 1978 and has taken on many committee roles over the years, including Club President 1996-97 and currently Hut Warden for our Welsh Hut (Beudy Mawr). As Hut Warden Bill has supported and facilitated the use of the hut for the Veterans in Sefton which is a charity to support ex-service people. Bill has also spent many an evening supporting the charity Climbers Against Cancer, raising funds for their valuable work.
It’s worth adding that Bill has clocked up 25 years on the Rucksack Club Committee, including stints as President, VP, and Indoor Organiser, as well as a decade as Beudy Hut Warden. Bill is also an Honorary Member of the Club.
Ironically, Bill was unable to attend the BMC Awards to receive his Award in person as he was leading the Beudy Mawr Working Meet – That’s dedication to duty and sums up the man perfectly!
