After two successful dinners in North Wales we return to the Castle Inn Hotel, Bassenthwaite, Cumbria. The President writes: I have block booked rooms for our use, allocated on a first come, first served, basis. Please book directly with the hotel [negotiated a rate of £90 PN B&B for a standard double room]. When booking direct with the hotel mention the Rucksack Club rate. There are plenty of nearby camper van sites, but camper vans are not allowed on the hotel grounds. Friday evening: Alex Nail, an award winning international landscape photographer, is our Principal Guest and I am delighted he has agreed to present his photography to us on Friday evening. Bar meals will be available…no need to book these in advance. Saturday: I will lead a walk up and over Skiddaw and, I am sure, there will be lots of other activities available which we can detail nearer the time such as climbing, cycling, outdoor swimming or under water bog snorkelling. The Wednesday Walker’s Alpine Tours 1999-2018: an A5, 66 page illustrated record. The original article by Frank Procter and Ian Wasson appeared in the 2018 Journal (pp 127). A further 46 pages of photographs covering every tour have now been added supporting the textual records and tables. Views of the parties, peaks, ascents, hüttes and many other aspects of the Tours now complete the publication.   You are cordially invited to download your own ‘Low Res’ 8 Mb copy here or if required a 50Mb ‘Hi Res’ digital version by visiting the Wednesday Walkers’ section in the Members Area of the website.   In response to requests a printed copy is now available [full colour; Meetstaff quality paper; wire stitched binding] by emailing John Payne before 18 Aug. The cost will be £6, Postage will be additional. Delivery is free, either direct from JP or to a contact at Wed Walks, Indoor Meets or Committee meetings. There will only be ONE Print Run and delivery will be in Oct. If post is required please forward an Addressed Envelope to John Payne.

Another tremendous turnout as the famed Gogarth micro-climate once again delivered a brief blast of summer (all be it a windy one). Many thanks to the 60 or so members and guests who braved the inauspicious forecast and were rewarded by sunshine on the crag and the beach BBQ. Special thanks to the barbecue helpers and burger flippers! As well as the beach fun there was a fair amount of climbing to be had, with ascents on Main Cliff, Upper Tier, Rhoscolyn and Holyhead Mountain, not to mention pedalling and paddling. Hi Everyone We’re back to a more usual schedule of 15 & 16 June this year (it’s them tides – King Canute had the right idea…) Low tide is 15:50 which means a leisurely start for those planning to get on Main Cliff. Pretty much everything else is as per the tried and trusted formula: Best Crag in the World; Tremendous scope to Climb / Walk / Bike / Paddle or Chill / Bird Watch or Sunbathe! Huge Beach BBQ Blah Blah Blah – you know the score! One minor hiccup this year is that the RSPB has decided to refurbish the café, so there’s a temporary catering van at the car park instead (usual range of drinks & snacks, but we’d better hope for a dry day!) Otherwise it’s the usual story: We will be camping at the Valley of the Rocks campsite at GR SH238806. The meet will kick off at 10:00 on Saturday at the South Stack car park: GR SH207823. We’ve just waved goodbye to the last of the Rucksackers at the end of a marathon SunRock meet – 36 members and guests spread over 3 weeks [from 16th February] is something of a record! It hasn’t all been “SUN” (and indeed we’ve seen snow!) but we managed to get some climbing done on 20 of the 21 days, so there was clearly no shortage of fabulous “ROCK” here in Leonidio. Hard to pick out highlights from so many great days; I think everyone managed to take advantage of the sunny spells to push their grades on the sharp end. Steve and James get the prize for “Getting Out There!”, climbing every day despite the Big Chill and managing a couple of the long multi-pitch adventures on the huge red cliff above the town, Kokkinovrachos, (as did John, Tony, Cec, Clair, Jim and Dave). Jake took the “Pulling Hard” award, with three 7c onsights and a host more 7s. Hi all, Im working for a small ski company in Austria this winter. They have one major departure from the Uk from 19 – 28 Jan based in the Wildshonau. The holiday is mainly a cross country ski holiday, with the option to go winter walking or skiing. Each day there will be guided cross country and winter walking trips. Prices included all transport, dinner, bed and breakfast in a 3 start hotel and the guided programme. Im working with a colleague on the cross country ski side. Just back from a routine warden visit to Beudy. Various items of lost property. I’ve found homes for most of it but there are the following that need claiming:- – pair of ‘Contour’ approach shoes, size 44 (they have been there for months); – navy blue hooded fleece, size M (Warby?); – pair of Haglof overtrousers; – pair of running shorts; – pair of running socks; – OMM waistpouch; – a towel with ‘Manchester City’ on it. If not claimed before the end of October, I’ll dispose or donate to charity. Not the City towel though – I’ll use it to clean the car! (only kidding – I know what you Citizens are like).
