Beudy – general update

Although the restrictions on hut numbers have been removed, it is important to understand that Covid has not gone away. Please read the revised Regulations for booking and using the huts on the website. At Beudy, please remember that you need to bring your own tea towels, pillows and bedding when staying in the hut. Antibacterial mattress protectors have been fitted on all the bunks. These are changed regularly. Steve and I understand that Members may still be wary of using or staying in Beudy. To try and address this, whenever we receive a booking request from more than one party for a certain date(s), we notify all concerned to encourage dialogue and to allow them to come to their own decisions. The fixed price tariff for electricity ends later this month and we will be on standard rates thereafter. There are no deals available. Our energy costs will dramatically increase. Even though the heaters are now fitted with timers, please think about whether you need them on at all. There is usually a large stock of wood for the fires. If you are at the hut and notice that this stock is getting low, please tell us and we[…]

The Anabasis …………….

Thank you to everyone who came along to last weeks’s Zoom when I warbled on about the Anabasis for 35 minutes. Excellent chat afterwards I thought. A couple of errors in my presentation – First, the Porkies came along in the 1980’s, not, as I said in the talk, 1969. Don’t know when that came from. Second, in addition to Stan Eccles, and Mike and Margaret Hart, our Pete Simpson and Simon Rogers are also Munro Completers. Apologies to Pete and Simon for omitting them on the night, and to anyone else of the Anabasis whose completion was not acknowledged. There were probably other mistakes in my presentation but I had watched more than enough to find these.

A new guide book of UK winter routes…what’s not to like?!

Lina Arthur has written a compendium of a 100 winter routes in England, Wales and Scotland. Each description contains all that’s needed for a competent party to climb the route safely and successfully. Importantly, she highlights the conditions that are needed to best climb it. This, together with a very thorough introduction covering tactics, equipment and avalanche forecasting means that this book takes safety very seriously indeed.  Jeremy Windsor spoke to Lina and asked her about the writing of the book, the full interview of which can be seen here…https://deathzone.7thwave.io/cgi-bin/renderpost.py?postid=1676 It looks a great book…well worth considering particularly for the ‘occasional’ winter climber!
