Marsden-Edale quick update

Carole has been struck down with the norovirus (sounds horrible) so will not be up to doing her “I counted them out and I counted them all back in again” routine. In addition, I’ve badly sprained my ankle so am unlikely to be completing the walk. So… I will be the new Carole for the day! Please make sure I get your names at the Marsden end (I’ll be there from about 7am) and more importantly, make sure I tick you off the list at Edale. If you are setting off before 7, please text me so I can get your name on the list. Also, if you realise you are not going to complete the walk and are dropping out part way (and are not going to be at the Ramblers Inn later) please text/phone to let me know. One other update: Trains from Edale to Manchester depart 16:47, 17:47, 18:48, 19:47 Trains from Edale to Sheffield depart 16:34, 17:33, 18:35, 19:33 Hope to see many of you tomorrow. Ian

Happy New Year from the Ist Wednesday Walk in 2018

Happy New Year from myself and the others on the first Wednesday walk in 2018 on 3rd Jan. Conditions were better than forecast, but Windgather lived up to its name. All New Year eve cobwebs were blown away by the 50 mph wind on the exposed section to Shining Tor. There were only light showers for 20 minutes. Fortunately we had a dry lunch at the bottom of Shooters Clough. Unfortunately we also had a dry finish as the Shady Oak landlord had decided to go on holiday at 10:30. Thanks to Pete, Neil, Tim and Geoff and all on the B team who got out there. Chris

New stove at Beudy

Happy New Year from Steve and myself! A multifuel stove has been fitted in the dining room at Beudy. Steve and Chris Foster worked hard to get the stove in last week and it was given a good christening over the New Year weekend. The stove is working well and makes a big difference to the room (no more burnt backs while you are having your dinner)! Some cosmetic work remains to be done – please bear with us while we comp!ete the project and get some pictures back on the walls.

Beudy at New Year

Thanks to everyone who helped to bring in the New Year at Beudy – a great weekend, despite the weather! And an even bigger thanks to Steve Gregory and Chris Foster who worked their socks off during the week to get the stove installed in the dining room in time for the festivities!

Meet as usual at Marsden at the end of Wessenden Rd (GR SE048107 OS South Pennines OL 21 map) for a 7:45 start – finish at The Ramblers in Edale. Granville will be doing his world famous soup kitchen again at Woodhead (car park at the start of the old road to Glossop) and Upper North Grain. Granville writes: “I will be in the two usual places. Firstly just off the Woodhead road, and then when everybody has past through, I will proceed to the Snake road, and again wait there until every weary soul has passed through. The menu will be… Woodhead road: Golden vegetable soup , mild chilli bean soup and bread roll. Tea , coffee, hot chocolate and plenty of water for bottles. Snake road: All of the above plus cakes various, for a little sugar boost, before hitting the Seal Stones. NB Both soups are vegetarian , the chilli soup is vegan. If any body needs gluten free bread and cake, would they please let know via email so I know what quantities I need to provide. COST! Sorry about this, but inflation[…]

Igloo Meet – 17/18 March 2018

Igloo Meet – 17/18 March 2018 On Christmas day I checked out the site for the 2018 Igloo meet with Moira. Access is via the Bellevue cable car followed by about an hour’s skinning or snowshoeing (alternatively about 2.5 hours from the valley if you’re feeling fit). Avalanche transceivers are highly recommended whenever travelling in the Alpine mountains in winter and these are available for hire locally along with snowshoes or ski touring equipment. Other equipment: sleeping bag, Thermorest/Karrimat, backpacking stove, pans, food etc., snow shovel/snow saw plus all your normal winter mountaineering safety kit. Winter mountaineering experience necessary. Please let me know if you interested in attending the meet.
