Skye Meet 28/9 to 4/10 2019

As usual the Skye meet is at the Glen Brittle Memorial Hut. The deadline for confirming the hut booking is at the end of June – at the moment we are 6 short of filling the hut – so it looks like I’ll have to cut back the booking to only the number that have confirmed they are coming. (I’ve sent an email to those who’ve already booked asking them to confirm). The consequences of not filling the hut are: * The cost for the 6 nights goes up to £90 each. (£72 each was for taking the whole hut). * I’m asking for a deposit of £45. (As there isn’t a waiting list people who book and cancel later will still have to pay the full amount if there is no one to take their place.) * We won’t be guaranteed to have exclusive use of the hut, or that any later bookings will be available. So if you are thinking of coming to enjoy the highlights of Skye then don’t delay and contact me now. Gary Bunting

Horse Thief Quarry Evening Meet

With an improving forecast, the optimistic contingent amongst the climbing crew were rewarded with a fine evening’s cragging at Horse Thief Quarry. No one could argue that it’s the most impressive or majestic crag in The Peak, but it’s hard to beat for sheer convenience (50m from the road) and has a couple of dozen routes, mostly low 6s. Perfect for a sociable “quick fix” The evening also saw two of our newest members, Adam and Marcus, make their first outdoor leads – quite a milestone. And Will, who was recently awarded with the Club’s inaugural Expedition Grant for his trip to Madagascar, came along to pick up some Big Walling tips and try his hand at “Living on The Ledge”.

High Moss Meet

Just wanted to remind everyone about the climbing meet this weekend at High Moss. Hopefully the high crags will be in condition and we will be able to climb on Esk Buttress and/or Dow. For those who are not keen on a long approach walk (or if the weather is not so good on the fells) there is plenty scope on Wallowbarrow, Stonestar, Brandy Crag or Burnt Crag . If conditions are poor on Sunday there is always the option of stopping off somewhere on the way home (e.g. Trowbarrow, Giggleswick, or even the wall at Kendal !) Hope you can make it.

Everest…listen to the Cerys Matthews interview

Everest is, once again, hitting the news for all the wrong reasons. However on 6music this morning Cerys Matthews interviewed Harriet Tuckey on her Sunday morning show.  Cerys’s in-depth interview with Harriet, the daughter of Griffith Pugh, provides a fascinating insight into the key role that Griff Pugh played in ensuring the success of the 1953 Everest Expedition. Many members attended Harriet’s lecture to the Club earlier this year…whether you attended her lecture or not, this interview provides insight into the unique role played by this enigmatic man…not only in relation to Everest, but many other aspects of his life, including his ground-breaking work combating hypothermia in the UK in the 1960s. [Note the interview starts around 30mins into the Show].
