Guidebooks and Maps

As I am now rather less active now, i.e. decrepit, I have decided to dispose of my climbing guides and the maps of places that I am unlikely to visit again. I have about 20 climbing guides, obviously somewhat dated, and a lot of maps covering the Pyrenees (some previously inherited from Gordon Adshead), Trekking maps of the Pokhara region of Nepal, Toubkal (Atlas Mts.), Shimla (India), California (Sierra Nevada) and Grand Teton National Park. I also have a pristine copy of ‘Walks and Scrambles in Norway’. I don’t tend to get to the indoor meets these days otherwise I would take them there. If any member would like to collect these from my home please contact me.

E-payment comes to Beudy!

Yes – its finally happened! You can now pay your hut fees for Beudy electronically. As well as the time honoured method of sending a cheque, you can make an e-payment. Pay ‘The Rucksack Club’ using sort code 20 55 41, account number 40599913 and reference your payment with your name, register page and number. No need to be long-winded – something like ‘Smith.P19L21, will enable me to identify the payment when I come to reconcile the account with the register entry (unless you’re a Llewellyn or a Cudahy, where an initial will be useful!). New payment slips, with full details of both methods of payment, have been prepared. Please note this is for Beudy only at this point in time – if it all works out, e-payments will be introduced at High Moss and Craigallan as well.

Rucksack Club 2020 Calendar – Get In There!

Hi Everyone (and Happy New Year if I haven’t already seen you) We’re planning to produce a Club calendar for 2020, featuring images by members. The plan is to select one image per month over the next year to go on the equivalent page of the calendar, with the finished result printed in early December in time to record your New Year’s resolutions or as a stocking filler. All proceeds will go to charity. The aims are: encourage more pictures to be posted on the website (there’s so much photographic talent in the Club that deserves sharing) raise money for charity spread the message about what an active and interesting club we are Here’s your chance to have your photo included… To enter each month, all you need to do is send in your pictures – either by email to calendar@rucksackclub.org or in a ‘Rich Post’ direct to the site selecting Category: Calendar. Please post full res images LANDSCAPE format, preferably with a caption, month and photo credit. Electrical work at Beudy

A Fire Safety Risk Assessment was carried out at Beudy just before Christmas. Because we take money in the form of hut fees, we fall under the definition of ‘business premises’ and are therefor subject to all kinds of legislation, including fire safety. The Assessment highlighted certain matters relating to electrical safety. These were a) modifying the fire detection system so that if one alarm went off, it would trigger all the other alarms, b) a requirement for an annual test certificate from a qualified person covering the fire alarm and emergency lighting systems and c) a requirement for a test certificate from a qualified person covering the whole electrical installation (this has to be done every 5 years). Do we have any qualified electricians in the Club who would be willing to carry out this work? If so, please contact me (details as per Handbook). Many thanks.

Marsden-Edale: A perfect day.

Near perfect weather (no rain, not too cold, following wind…) on the back of a period of mainly dry weather over Christmas and the New Year delivered excellent walking conditions and fast times. Other than a bit of mist on Bleaklow Head, visibility was good too. Excellent support by Granville’s Glorious Soup Kitchen meant the participants were kept full and warm with soup, cakes, teas & coffees etc. Numbers down a good 30% from normal due to the train strike, but multiple offers of lifts at The Ramblers made sure everyone got back somehow. Some stats: Completing the M-E single: Members 8, Associate Members 1, Guests 8. Completing the M-E double: Members 7, Associate Members 3, (plus 1 member who did the overnight E-M only). Doing various partial routes: Members 22, Associate Members 2, Guests 3. So, total on the hills: 55 (Members 38, Associate Members 6, Guests 11). First to The Ramblers: Associate Member Simon Rippon – 1pm. First Member to The Ramblers: Jean Llewellyn (that new knee must be working wonders!). Many thanks to Carole Smithies for counting them out and counting them back in again, to Granville Toyn for excellent soup & cakes at both Longdendale and[…]
