Summer Alpine Meet 2018

I am planning an “Alpine” Meet next summer in the Western French Pyrenees. This would be between the 4th and 12th of August, in the vicinity of Lescun, south of Oloron-Sainte-Marie. The exact details have yet to be defined but the idea would be to give a glimpse of the limestone area of the Aspe valley. This is a fine place for climbing, walking, cycling and probably kayaking. Climbing The excellent Aiguilles d’Ansabère provide some very nice multi-pitch climbing on sculpted limestone. The most famous route is the Spigolo on the petite Aiguille, supposedly reminiscent of the Dollies (or the other way around) The other big spot in the valley for long multi-pitch is Pène d’Udapet, once again on good limestone There are quite a few more routes on the Chemin de la Mâture (some nice slabs there) More climbing crags around: http://grimpeursbearnais.blogspot.de http://escalade64.fr Mountaineering Lescun Cirque is a bit poor in terms of long quality mountaineering routes, but there’s still some stuff out there like the Larangus Arete on Grand Billare However going over to the next Ossau valley stands Pic du Midi d’Ossau with all sorts of routes of every difficulty. Some topos here: http://www.remi-thivel.com/toposmontagnepyreneesnord.html and here https://www.camptocamp.org/waypoints/176533/fr/pic-du-midi-d-ossau[…]

SunRock 2018

Hello SunRockers! We’re making plans for SunRock 2018 and wanted to get some input before progressing too far. We’ve got a couple of options for you to consider:   Plan A: Portugal / Algarve – early to mid February   There is a fair bit of climbing to be had here, and a brand-new guidebook to the whole country, see http://www.climb-europe.com/RockClimbingPortugal/Southern-Portugal.html for info. There should be plenty of accommodation options along the Algarve coast. However, there is not such a concentration of climbing in one area, and some of the climbing options include trad / sea cliffs.   Plan B: Catalunya (likely Sierra de Prades aka ‘Costa Dorada’ or ‘Tarragona’) – mid March   The Sierra de Prades includes iconic crags like Siurana amongst the offerings, see http://www.climb-europe.com/RockClimbingSpain/Sierra-de-Prades.html . With over 5,000 routes in the area, there are plenty of options (though they are quite spread out), and possibilities for accommodation on the coast or in the mountains (though maybe not the ‘mega pad’ we’ve come to expect on the Blanca). However, grades do tend to be a bit harder than the Blanca.   So – what do you reckon? Please get in touch with any preferences for dates /[…]

Beudy Mawr – possible disruption to water supply

I have just been advised by Welsh Water that the water supply to Beudy may be disrupted this weekend. WW have had reports from other users about loss of pressure and WW are doing some works to try and rectify the problem. Please note that it is only a possibility and by the time you read this the problem may well have been sorted. However, and just in case, watch out for loss of pressure (particularly using the showers) and you may get some brownish water coming through if WW have had to turn the supply off. When there has been an issue in the past, I’ve filled the kettles up from the stream!

Beudy bookings update

Here you go – the current hut bookings up to the end of February 2018. Tim Taylor has booked 6 spaces for this coming Wednesday and Thursday (15/16). Beudy is reserved for Joe Fisher’s joint meet with the MUMC next weekend – contact Joe if you intend going. The following weekend (25/26 November) the hut is reserved for Audrey Russell’s annual walking/running meet. Make sure you contact Audrey to book your bunk. In December, the hut has been booked on behalf of the Austrian Alpine Club by Ellie Howarth for the weekend of 16/17. About 10 people have expressed an interest in spending the New Year weekend (30/31) at Beudy. Into 2018 and we have Gareth Llewellyn’s Club Meet on 20/21 January. The Skyline MC have booked 10 places for the weekend of 27/28 January. In February, the Red Rope club have booked 11 spaces on the weekend of 3/4. The following weekend (10/11), Phil Deakin (no relation!) has booked 10 places. As usual, there is plenty of room at the hut during the week. Just let Steve or myself know if you intend going to the hut. Thanks
