Huge congratulations to Julie Finn who won the individual Equinox 24 ultra race over the weekend of 21/22 September. This was the first time a woman has won the overall solo category [with over 650 solo runners], she also ran further than any other woman has before with 190km…and all this when it was her ‘proper’ event since the birth of her daughter Evie just over a year ago! [A post on Ukrunchat provides further details.] Julie on the Equinox 24 Julie with Winners Trophy It has been quite a year for the Finn/Zeidan family as Mike completed the Ramsay Round in June in a time of 23:38…especially good since it was partly self-supported and, with a young child, he’d not had time to recce the route properly beforehand! This completes the trilogy of mountain rounds for Mike, with the Bob Graham in 2016 and Paddy Buckley in 2017. Mike on the Ramsay Round Well done both…even more so because I understand they are also in the middle of moving house…as if ultra running was not enough!

In October, Beudy is free anytime except the weekend of 19th/20th, when Thom Hall has booked the whole place. In November, apart from the advertised Club Meets on 23rd/24th (Chris Foster) and 30th/1st Dec (Audrey Russell), the hut has been booked for the weekend of 9th/10th by Reading MC (12 spaces), and Wednesday/Thursday (13th/14th) when Blind Veterans will be using the whole hut for a charity event. There are no bookings at all in December, although I am sure there will be the usual New Year get together at the end of the month. As usual, let me or Steve know if you want to use Beudy. We’d love to see you using what we think is the Club’s best hut!

Fancy something different! The programme for the British Mountain Medicine Society (BMMS) Science Day taking place on Wednesday 13th November 2019 is now available…and what an eclectic programme it is too! There are scientists, clinicians and researchers from across the UK speaking on a wide range of fascinating topics. From the latest research on the brain, heart and GI tract at high altitude, to the evidence behind recent developments in mountain rescue techniques and training. There are also got talks on the evolution of MEDEX’s highly popular “Travel at High Altitude” booklet and the science that underpins the climbing of Pik Lenin, a 7134m giant that lies on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan! If all this wasn’t enough, there are posters and short presentations on a diverse range of subjects ranging from the role of beetroot juice in acclimatisation to the management of a frozen shoulder in Antarctica and the high altitude illnesses of Sir Edmund Hillary! The final session of the day will celebrate the 1960-61 Silver Hut Expedition and it’s enormous contribution to mountain medicine. Two of the original members – Jim Milledge and Mike Gill – will be joined by Annabel Nickol and the award winning writer[…]

Currently 4 of us flying Manchester to Antalya on 16 Nov and back 24th. Heading for sport climbing at Geyikbayiri. Nice cheap German campsite (Google Josito camping). We are going to use their tents and have them fetch us from airport (all very cheap). Anyone interested give me a shout for more details. PS it’s sport climbing so not essential you have a partner.
