New stove at Beudy

Happy New Year from Steve and myself! A multifuel stove has been fitted in the dining room at Beudy. Steve and Chris Foster worked hard to get the stove in last week and it was given a good christening over the New Year weekend. The stove is working well and makes a big difference to the room (no more burnt backs while you are having your dinner)! Some cosmetic work remains to be done – please bear with us while we comp!ete the project and get some pictures back on the walls.

Beudy at New Year

Thanks to everyone who helped to bring in the New Year at Beudy – a great weekend, despite the weather! And an even bigger thanks to Steve Gregory and Chris Foster who worked their socks off during the week to get the stove installed in the dining room in time for the festivities!

Marsden to Edale – update

Marsden-Edale 6th January. The annual post-Christmas romp on the moors needs no introduction! Meet as usual at Marsden at the end of Wessenden Rd (GR SE048107 OS South Pennines OL 21 map) for a 7:45 start – finish at The Ramblers in Edale. Granville will be doing his world famous soup kitchen again at Woodhead (car park at the start of the old road to Glossop) and Upper North Grain. Granville writes: “I will be in the two usual places. Firstly just off the Woodhead road, and then when everybody has past through, I will proceed to the Snake road, and again wait there until every weary soul has passed through. The menu will be… Woodhead road: Golden vegetable soup , mild chilli bean soup and bread roll. Tea , coffee, hot chocolate and plenty of water for bottles. Snake road: All of the above plus cakes various, for a little sugar boost, before hitting the Seal Stones. NB Both soups are vegetarian , the chilli soup is vegan. If any body needs gluten free bread and cake, would they please let know via email so I know what quantities I need to provide. COST! Sorry about this, but inflation[…]

Igloo Meet – 17/18 March 2018

Igloo Meet – 17/18 March 2018 On Christmas day I checked out the site for the 2018 Igloo meet with Moira. Access is via the Bellevue cable car followed by about an hour’s skinning or snowshoeing (alternatively about 2.5 hours from the valley if you’re feeling fit). Avalanche transceivers are highly recommended whenever travelling in the Alpine mountains in winter and these are available for hire locally along with snowshoes or ski touring equipment. Other equipment: sleeping bag, Thermorest/Karrimat, backpacking stove, pans, food etc., snow shovel/snow saw plus all your normal winter mountaineering safety kit. Winter mountaineering experience necessary. Please let me know if you interested in attending the meet.

Beudy at New Year – update

I’ve heard from the following people who intend coming to Beudy for the New Year weekend:- Kate and Boece Cardus, Karen and George Hostford, Sue Whittle and Neil Harwood, Chris Foster and Helen, Guy Fox-Kelly, Barbara and myself. Others who have told me they might turn up are Steve Gregory (if the ice in Scotland is no good to climb), John Warby (if the NYE gig doesn’t happen) and Dave Cowans. Cec will definitely NOT be coming as he will be sat by the phone, waiting for that call from the agency about that lucrative NYE shift on the railway! Let me know if you want to join in the fun(?!). As I’ve said before, its very informal – bring something to eat and drink; I’ll make sure the fire is kept in until 2018. Bill PS Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

Winter Alpine Meet: 10 – 17 March 2018

12th December 2017. Yesterday afternoon we enjoyed some lovely skiing, the snow stopped and the mountains looked fantastic in their winter cloaks (zoom in to the cable car station in the bottom right corner of the photo for a sense of scale). Nice fresh snow on and off piste. Minus 10 last night and heavy snow today: What to do: no this isn’t me skinning up from the Prarion lift station this morning -I took the photo from the warm and the dry – looking out of my chalet window 🙂 Today looked more like a day for indoor Crevasse Rescue practice, no we haven’t got a severe subsidence problem but it seemed like a good time to dig out the Glacier Skiing Equipment and make sure we can remember everything. It was also finally time to put the summer rock climbing gear away for the winter. After lunch I think we’ll do some indoor avalanche transceiver practice – its a game I play with Moira. One person hides a transceiver somewhere in the house and the other person has to find it against the clock. It’s not quite as easy as it sounds because is a three dimensional problem[…]

Beudy this New Year

Hello everyone who has already shown an interest in going (and anyone else for that matter – you are all welcome). Barbara and I intend travelling down on New Years Eve, although we know that Kate and Boece will be there from the day before. The arrangements are very relaxed – we’ll be taking a couple of veggie bakes for people to share. If you are coming, bring a seasonal dish (and drink) of your choice. Oh, and do let me know, so that I can chop enough wood to keep the fires going until well into 2018!
