“On the hill with…” John Richardson

“On the hill with…” series continues with a Club legend, John Richardson, long distance runner and walker, skier, mountaineer and latterly cyclist. He has the accolade of being the only person to be elected President of the Club on two separate occasions [the second being over the 100th Anniversary].John river crossing in Chile 1999 How did you get into walking and climbing?    I guess it was almost written in my stars: my maternal grandfather was a lifelong enthusiast for what were then known as Walking Tours. He, Entwisle, was co-founder of our Club and served as Secretary for the first nineteen years of the Club’s existence. He raised three daughters –the eldest was my mum – to love the Great Outdoors and so this love was passed down to me. After the passing of his wife, whom he had looked after devotedly through several years of dementia, he set off at the age of 82 to walk from Land’s End to John o’ Groats [RCJ 1956 pp82-84] As the years have passed I have become ever more warmed by his memory.   Who has had the most influence on your mountain experiences? The name that springs immediately to mind is[…]

2020 SunRock update [Nov 2019]

2020 SunRock meet on the Costa Blanca, 14-21 March…update 27 November 2019   Hi SunRockers   We’ve already got about 25 confirmed or probable for SunRock 2020, so it’s looking like another fun trip. Here’s an update so you can make plans / book flights / accommodation etc:   Dates: We’ve confirmed dates as 14 to 21 March, but various people are thinking of staying for longer around those dates.   Location: We’ll be on the Costa Blanca, and I’ve block-booked a couple of large houses at FinePark near Finestrat (and beneath the Puig Campana) for the week. These sleep a total of 30+ (in a mix of bunk and conventional bed rooms) and there are also a few smaller houses in the same facility. It’s where we stayed in 2017 – check out https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2017/02/11/rucksack-club-sunrock-meet-sella-costa-blanca/ https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2017/02/12/penyon-difach/ and the posts around there if you need a reminder).  I have negotiated a special rate of Euro 110 per person per week, BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR OWN BOOKINGS. Please email Michael at michael@finepark.com to confirm your booking, along with dates of course and any room preferences / plans for sharing.   Flights & car hire: You’re spoilt for choice, but it’s[…]

Pictures for this year’s RC Journal

Pictures for the Journal It’s helpful to have your pictures where you think they are appropriate in an article. This helps me to insert them later as near as I can to the intended placing. However, we also need your pictures as separate file attachments – jpeg, in as high a resolution as possible. We can’t simply take embedded files and use them. This is mainly because the layout on a Journal page will be different from a standard document page, and the software can’t handle embedded pictures. Also, when pictures are embedded they are a lower resolution. When you send me the pictures separately, PLEASE send them as a FILE ATTACHMENT. I can’t use a picture embedded in an email – It’s hard to extract, and sometimes impossible, and again loses resolution. I realise, these days, most phones put a picture in an email body when you send them. Your phone email should also allow you to send as an attachment from the picture library. Many thanks Neil Goldsmith Editor
