Oh What a Night! – Great Entertainment was had by all at Ravensdale at last Wednesday’s evening meet the first day the crag re-opened after an extended bird ban. A team of veterans (i.e. those still daft enough to climb on polished trad limestone) assembled to re-live their glory days and ticked off a series of routes across Raven Buttress including Conclusor, Delusor, Mealy Bugs, Mealystopheles (nearly!) Ploy and Frore (impossible!). Andy Tomlinson demonstrated the art of flying and why it is always best to wear a helmet! Whilst Jim Burton sought to take out hut warden Bill Deakin by dislodging a large block. That’s one way of getting out of your hut fees! “Alls well that ends well”. Andy was OK and the old “cream team” retired to the Red Lion at Litton. Special mention for Domininic & Helen Oughton plus Steve George who came to the pub but had the sense (or maybe not) to climb on Garage Buttress.

Various forecasts agreed there would be a climbable weather window at some stage on Saturday, but couldn’t agree when. Turned out to be 11am to 2pm, and the early birds got the best of the conditions Ultra dry, wind-blasted rock made for great friction, but blustery belays on top. Good to see so many people turning out despite the predicted maelstrom (which duly rolled in about 15 mins after the above shot!) At least it was dry at The Yorkshire Bridge.

Thanks to the eight meet attendees at High Neb today who managed to get a window of three hours climbing before the rain came. Unfortunately the forecast for tomorrow is for rain all day so I am calling of Sundays meet.

The current forecasts are showing some rain around so the plan is for Stanage High Neb on the Saturday (28th), I will be at the crag from 12 noon, earlier if the forecast improves before then and the pub is The Yorkshire Bridge. Sunday will be Froggatt again I’ll be at the crag from12 noon, the pub to be The Grouse. My contact details are as the handbook. Hope to see there.
