SunRock 2020 – not quite what we planned!

SunRock 2020 didn’t quite turn out as planned! Not so much “Get Out There!” more “Get Out OF There!” A few of us made it to Finestrat and did manage to enjoy a bit of SUN and ROCK, before things went completely pear-shaped and we all had our various frustrations and adventures getting home. Many thanks to Guy, Tony, George, Karen, Chris, John, Ian and Mark for their cheerful company and stoicism! Here are a few photos from the fun bits, and you’ll find a bit of a write up of the 3,000km dash that Helen and I made back to Blighty here: https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2020/03/21/sunrock-2020-not-quite-what-wed-planned/ Plans for SunRock 2021 are clearly on hold and it will be interesting (and perhaps a bit scary) to see how the world will have changed by this time next year. It’s a consolation that there will still be plenty of Sun and Rock out there – Fingers crossed that we’ll be back in a position to be able to enjoy it! Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy! Cheers, Dom

Journal 2020

Journal 2020 Neil Goldsmith, our Editor, writes: You should, by now, have had the 2019 edition of the Journal.  The Journal depends upon your contributions and the latest edition demonstrates that a wide variety of you, and not just the usual suspects, have something interesting to say. Many of you will be planning or partaking in interesting activities throughout the year. Make sure you document them and send them in as articles.  It’s even easier now  to take a good quality photo and we are less constrained than in the past about how many we can publish. I have put together a set of notes for contributors to help you to make my life easier in editing the Journal. Keep the articles coming in – don’t leave it until the end of the year! Neil’s details are as per the Handbook.

Beudy Mawr

I’m away from this Friday until the 28th of March (or maybe later if I get ‘locked down’)! All the known hut bookings can be found on the web calendar. Check this before making a booking. I will have internet access so let me know if you want to stay. If there are any other matters which need resolving on the ground, please contact Steve.

Books for sale

Peter Roberts, who passed away in December, had some interesting books. I have collected some from his house. The solicitors dealing with the estate are also Peter’s executors and they are happy for the Club to have the books and dispose of them. I thought Club Members should have the opportunity to buy the books, any proceeds going to the upkeep of Beudy Mawr, where Peter was Hut Warden for over 20 years. Photos are attached. If you are interested in any of the books, email me (billdeakin@yahoo.com) with your offer by the end of this month. I will then review any offers and let people know. I have done some research and had a dealer look at the books, so I have some idea of their worth. Where there are several books in the photo, treat them as one ‘lot’. Bill

MUMC Dinner

As you know, we have been forging links with the MUMC. Their Dinner is this Saturday, 7th March at the Skiddaw Hotel, Keswick. We have been invited to join them for the Dinner and ceilidh afterwards. More details are on our Facebook page. It would be good if we could have a presence.

Etherow Watershed Update.

I’m still intending to depart from Hobson Moor Quarry at 7.30 a.m. this Saturday 29th Feb. However I have slightly revised the route as it seems appropriate that the Etherow Watershed should finish at Etherow Country Park (which is just outside Marple). This makes little difference to the distance and timing, and is hopefully a more pleasant last 5 miles, but does have the disadvantage that we don’t finish walking where we left the cars at Hobson Moor! I have therefore enlisted help in the form of 2 ‘willing’ drivers to ferry us back to our cars. Please confirm your attendance, if you have not already done so, in order that I can ensure we have sufficient capacity to get us all safely back to the start. Many thanks Andy Llewellyn Contact details as per handbook

Beudy bookings update

Tim Rippon has booked 4 places this coming weekend. In March, Ian Crossley has booked 3 places for 16/17, and Sarah Crilley has booked 8 places for the weekend of 28/29. In April, the Easter weekend is reserved for Club use. The Derbyshire Pennine Club have booked the whole hut for the weekend of 18/19. Plenty of availability. Let myself or Steve Gregory know if you want to use the hut.

‘Get (further) out there’

At last night’s Committee meeting, a fair bit of time was spent (again) on our communications strategy. How do we spread the word about the Club’s attractions and its activities, how do we keep that word in people’s minds and how do we follow things up. Its one thing to publish our outdoor meets programmes, but in these days of fast moving social media platforms where that particular ‘post’ may only be ‘in view’ for a short time, how do we remind people (Members and prospective Members) about it? We have Meetstaff, a website and a Facebook page. I don’t think we can count the Journal – to me, its more of a historical record. Members also use ‘closed group’ social media to communicate. I don’t know how to use social media to its full potential – do you? Should the Club be using Facebook more? Is WhatsApp and Instagram the way forward? How can we develop our communications with the MUMC/MUHC/other groups who may want to ‘get out there’? Lots of questions – can you help with finding the answers? If you are willing to help, please contact me. I’m on the telephone (ring or text), email, Facebook, WhatsApp[…]
